Why Lax Wax’s Cold Water Wax

Non-Toxic Eco Formula

Made with a beeswax base, coconut oil, and tree resin, our cold water surf wax is made with reef-safe and non-toxic ingredients. It provides strong grip while staying petroleum-free.

Ultra Sticky For Cold Water

Our surf wax for cold water includes a substantially higher portion of tree resin in its formula compared to our other Lax Wax variants. By staying soft and sticky in cold water temperatures, it’s specialized to provide the extra traction and grip you need for surf sessions in colder water.

Surf Performance Comparable To Traditional Wax

Our cold water surf wax performs comparable to traditional waxes that commonly include petroleum ingredients, meaning you get the same reliable grip you expect while staying clean and eco-friendly.

Cold Water Surf Wax FAQ’s

Have questions about Lax Wax’s cold water surf wax? Find answers to the most common questions below!

Surf wax for cold water is softer and stickier, designed to not become too brittle and lose its stick in lower temperatures, something that can happen quick in freezing California winter water. Warm water wax is denser, made to retain its structure and prevent mushing while staying tacky in tropical or warm conditions, made for harsh California summers and even places like Florida. Using the correct wax for your water temperature optimizes your board’s wax coat for performance depending on the temperature of the water, making sure your coat is tacky no matter the weather or location.

You can get away with it, I’ve known many experienced surfers that just use base coat year round in San Diego. However if you don’t have experience like that, you might find that it brittles quickly and loses stick in actual cold water. This can make your board feel slippery and reduce control, like you never waxed it to begin with. If you’re unsure, it’s best to use a dedicated cold water wax.

It can, but this can be even less viable than the “warm water wax in cold water” question, as cold water wax may melt right off your board from under your feet in warm conditions. Cold water wax is highly susceptible to instantly melting straight into the ocean before you even use it, which can leave your board even more slippery than before, especially in tropical conditions like Florida.

In San Diego and select California waters, you may be able to get away with it depending on the weather, as the water doesn’t really get over 70 degrees most months out of the year. But if the hot sun is beaming onto your board, it can loosen it up fast and slide off.

Our cold water surf wax is formulated for surfing in temperatures between 56°F and 66°F. It’s best for chilly dawn patrol, San Diego winter surf sessions, and colder coastal regions where the water temperature falls around this range.
