Traditional Surf Waxes Contain Ingredients Harmful To The Ocean

Most surfers don’t think twice about what’s in their surf wax, but many mainstream options are built on petroleum-based formulas that can linger in the ocean. According to a Medium article, a study reported that surfers are responsible for adding up to 86 tons of microplastics to the ocean every year through their use of conventional surfboard wax.

Popular brands helped define modern surfing, but the traditional surfboard wax blends often rely on petroleum-derived ingredients that don’t align with a cleaner ocean lifestyle.

So What’s In Your Usual Surf Wax?

Typical surf wax bars are usually made with a blend of paraffin wax and tackifiers designed for grip across different surf conditions. While effective, these blends are based predominately on petroleum derivatives, harmful additives and mystery ingredients that often ignore environmental impact in favor of consistency and durability. After the commercialization of surf wax around the 70’s, the majority of the market shifted on these types of wax structures almost entirely and still exist in the majority of big brands today.

Wax Your Board Sustainably With Lax Wax

Lax Wax was created as a cleaner, more thoughtful alternative for surfers without compromising performance. Our surfboard wax is designed to deliver strong grip while using an organic blend inspired by natural materials, based with raw beeswax from local San Diego beekeepers.

Natural Performance Over Petroleum

Lax Wax uses a cleaner formulation inspired by an organic blend of beeswax and coconut oil rather than petroleum-heavy wax systems. You still get a grip designed for performance while minimizing the harsh ingredients entering the ocean. Lax Wax was made to show that you can have a good surf wax while staying mindful of the ingredients that go into it.

Clean Dyes and Fragrances

Our formulas use eco-conscious dyes and fragrances, keeping our signature look, feel and scent while staying aligned with a more ocean-friendly approach. That means the same vibrant surf wax experience you love, while avoiding harmful mystery additives.

Hand-Poured in Small Batches

Every bar of Lax Wax is hand-poured in small batches right here in San Diego, focusing on consistency and freshness without commercialized shortcuts that sneak in harmful additives or mystery ingredients. Our Surf Wax Types

Check out our multiple varying surf wax types, individually formulated to give you the best grip in any conditions.

Our base coat surf wax is designed to build a strong foundation layer through our bumpy beeswax-based blend. This layer helps structure your board so your top wax grips better through changing surf conditions with quality, eco-conscious ingredients. Use as a base for your top coat waxes or alone in tropical waters. Formulated for Warm to Tropical water temperatures (>78°) if used alone as a top coat.

Our cool water surf wax is formulated for reliable stickiness at cool water breaks, where warm water wax can be too dense and cold water wax can still be excessively soft. This wax is intentionally balanced for cool conditions, providing the right amount of softness and tack for fall and spring sessions in SoCal, as well as year-round use in cooler waters. Formulated for water temperatures ranging from 60°–72°F.

Our warm water surf wax is built for stability in higher water temperature environments where softer wax would give out, from tropical environments like Hawaii or Florida, to a warm SoCal summer. This wax is specialized to provide tackiness so your feet stay locked in with nothing but sustainable and simple ingredients. Formulated for water temperatures ranging from 68°-78° (June through October in SoCal).

Our cold water surf wax is formulated for extra stickiness in lower water temperature range sessions where many waxes will brittle up and lose their function. This wax is intentionally formulated to be extra soft and sticky for cold, harsh conditions, with an added dollop of tree resin as a tackifier. Formulated for water temperatures ranging from 65° and below (November through May in SoCal).
