Why Lax Wax’s Base Coat
Non-Toxic Eco Formula
Our base coat features a beeswax and tree resin blend that reduces reliance on petroleum-based ingredients. Our eco-conscious formula delivers dependable grip while remaining reef-friendly and non-toxic.
Better Build Up Using Beeswax
Lax wax is made with beeswax; forming strong, grippy wax bumps while remaining easy to apply. Bumps build up quickly and hold their shape, helping top coats for any water temperature bond better and makes your wax last.
Tree Resin For Surf Performance
We use tree resin as a natural tackifier in all of our waxes. This delivers an extra boost to your grip and gives our wax more integrity than other waxes, all while keeping our core ingredients natural.
Surf Wax Base Coat FAQ’s

Apply base coat surf wax to the top of your board using diagonal or circular motions with firm pressure, until small, sticky bumps begin to form. This is the best technique to help create wax bumps that allow your top coat to grip better and build up faster. Cover the entire standing area evenly for the best traction and long-lasting performance.
Don’t do that!!!!!!!!!!!! If your wax won’t be touching your feet for traction, it pretty much defeats the purpose of applying it at all. Wax is supposed to be applied to the deck (top) of the surfboard to help your feet stick to your board. Waxing the bottom of your board can increase drag and mess up a lot of the general water mechanics that go into surfing – and may get you laughed at by select types of surfers.
A base coat isn’t technically required, but it helps your overall wax layer last many times longer and improves overall grip. If you need to wax up a fresh board quickly for whatever reason, you can get away with just using a top coat, but using a base coat creates better build up and reduces how often you need to fully re-wax your board.
Base coat surf wax is a harder base wax designed to create a foundation layer on your board. It forms textured wax bumps that allow your temperature-specific top coats to stick better and for longer, resulting in stronger traction and improved surf performance.
Using a base coat with really any type of temperature-specific top coat wax is highly recommended. Warm water wax, as every wax that isn’t a base coat, is softer and wears down faster. Laying a base coat before your top coats helps maintain grip and keeps your wax in place during longer surf sessions.
