The Concern of Conventional Surf Wax

Surf wax was originally created to surf made from all kinds of materials, but as it continued to evolve over the years, it became increasingly reliant on harsh chemicals built for scale, consistency, and performance. According to a 2024 compositional analysis published on ResearchGate, the majority samples of conventional surf waxes are clearly dominated by petroleum-derived paraffin and related hydrocarbon waxes, highly resistant to biodegrading by nature.

With these stats emerging, it shows how far the industry has drifted from ocean-conscious design. Even as surfing culture continues to move toward sustainability, most wax on the market still follows outdated, production-first formulas.

Commercialization Versus Ingredient Awareness

Most surf wax is designed with the goals of commercialization in mind, prioritizing consistency at scale, shelf stability, and predictable performance across a wide range of conditions, but the ingredients behind that performance are often not a major part of the conversation. The result is a category that has seen relatively little innovation compared to other surf equipment.

Traditional surf waxes with these recipes have been around for more than half a century, however surfers still rarely stop to consider what their wax is actually made of, or how those materials behave once they enter the ocean. This is where Lax Wax comes in.

Why Lax Wax’s Cold Water Wax Over Traditional Brands

Lax Wax’s cold water wax is designed for maximum stick and responsiveness in colder conditions while using a cleaner, naturally based wax recipe.

Eco Formula with Natural Ingredients

Made with simple, natural ingredients like beeswax and coconut oil, our cold water surf wax is based with sustainable, ocean conscious ingredients free of harsh fillers and mystery ingredients. Our carefully hand-crafted formula is tuned to the perfect level of softness and stick to provide strong grip in harsh, cold conditions while staying petroleum-free.

Ultra Sticky For Cold Water

Our surf wax for cold water doubles up on a serious dollop of natural tackifiers and tree resin in its formula compared to our other Lax Wax types. Our specialized balanced formula is balanced to stay extra sticky without brittling up in cold water temperatures to provide the extra traction and grip you need for surf sessions in colder water.

Surf Performance Comparable To Traditional Wax

Our cold water surf wax was heavily inspired by and performs comparable to the big-name brands on the market today. With Lax Wax, you get the same reliable grip and feel you expect while staying clean and eco-conscious, from the bumps to the scent!

Our Types Of Surfboard Waxes

Learn more about our other surf waxes, each hand-crafted for all conditions.

Our base coat surf wax is designed to build a strong, textured foundation layer that helps your top wax grip more effectively throughout your session. Our base formula is hand-poured with a hearty dose of beeswax and built with sustainable ingredients to create long-lasting bumps many sessions over. Use it as a foundation under your topcoat, or on its own in warmer tropical water conditions above 78°F.

Our cool water surf wax is designed to provide reliable grip in known cooler waters where specialized warm water and cold water bars don’t quite do it. This wax type’s balanced softness and tack making it a great choice for fall and spring sessions in SoCal and year-round surfing for cooler water breaks. Formulated for water temperatures ranging from 60°–72°F.

Our warm water surf wax formula is tuned for stability and consistent grip in higher temperatures and sun-exposed surf sessions. From tropical breaks to peak summer days in Southern California, it holds its tack without getting greasy or loose. Best suited for water temperatures between 68°F and 78°F, typically June through October in Southern California.

Our cold water surf wax is built for maximum grip in colder conditions where standard formulas tend to brittle up, chip off, and lose their function. With added natural tackifiers and extra tree resin, it stays soft, sticky, and dependable where control matters most under colder water conditions. Formulated for water temperatures 65°F and below, typically November through May in Southern California.
